German automaker Mercedes-Benz gears itself up to the challenge of redesigning its flagship vehicle S-class sedan.
Though the car industry has been filled with faster car models and cars catering to the classier and exclusive bracket, the S-class somehow has maintained its position of being the benchmark of premium and luxury vehicles. With the introduction of the upcoming 2014 model, the company plans to hold the said position by announcing a host of safety-promoting technologies and equipping their vehicles with over-the-top features such as a fully automated perfume dispenser and a massaging seat.
Steve Cannon, CEO of US based Mercedes-Benz, realized that people have changed the way they perceive luxury. The company has therefore intended to be at the forefront of luxurious vehicles while at the same time promote safe and comfortable driving.
The S-class iteration made its debut back in 2005 and since then, it had been through several changes. The popular sedan reached its peak the year after when more than 30,000 of various S-class models have dominated the streets of the U.S. Models such as the S-550 and the S63 AMG are just among the few which gained immense popularity.
However, the next four years saw a decline in the demand which had been recorded to be lesser than 12,000. Analysts try to explain the situation by expressing that while the decline means that there is a drop in the number of buyers, it also means that the driving public had a shift in their mindset.
At present, there is an increasing demand for compact sedans and crossover luxury line of cars that include the Audi Q5 and A4 models, series 1 and 3 of the BMW, and the GLK and C-class models of Mercedes. The latter’s upcoming 2014 model, while smaller than the average C-class, will be used as the company’s bet to entice new luxury buyers.
For those who are seeking new and costly technologies, they can opt for the premium S 550 model. This newly enhanced and big model features a variety of cameras and also sonar and radar sensors otherwise known as ‘sensor fusion.’ It has the goal of reducing accidents, injuries, and fatalities among its drivers.
