Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is the final chapter of Lightning's saga, and Square Enix says the open world will be more active than previous tiles.
Design director Yuji Abe told Siliconera.com Lightning Returns players have an aibliity to stop time during play, which he feels gives the game more dimension.
"The gauge on the lower-left part of the screen is called GP, which is something like a convenience point system," Abe said. "This can be used during battle, to teleport to specific areas on the field, or to even stop time. For example, if you have a lot going on (and not enough time), you'll be able to stop time. So, if you go ahead and use GP without any hesitation, your playthrough will surely be easier."
GP stands for Glory Point, which is acquired by clearing battles. If you're a player who wants to beat the game without participating in battles, Square Enix has thrown challenges your way.
"I believe there will be a huge hurdle to doing that; however, Lightning will be able to level up by simply clearing key events, which will increase her parameters. Again, if you want to increase her parameters by a larger amount, you can also purchase equipment," Abe said.
According to Siliconera.com, Lightning's equipment will be vital to what abilities and attributes she will possess. Players will also have the ability to buy gear sold at the first shop in the game, but it will be a challenge to gather up money for such purchases.
Creators of Lightning Returns main focus were to give players freedom to explore the world, and gamers to do multiple walk-throughs. The new areas are so big that players may not be able to see everything in their first try.
"Our games have never put too much consideration into the idea of 'being able to go to areas that look accessible,' so we've made it our goal to take that part a step higher," Abe told Siliconera.com. "Covering 100% in those regards might be a little difficult, but I'd say that you'll be able to go to about 90% of all visible areas."
'Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII' will be released to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles for $59.99 on Feb. 11, 2014.
