Baltimore Ravens third-year running back Bernard Pierce was arrested on DUI charges early Wednesday morning, according to a report from Kevin Patra of NFL.com.

"Pierce's 2014 Ford Mustang was stopped just before 2 a.m. for speeding at Dulaney Valley Road and I-695 in Towson, Maryland, the Baltimore County Police Department said in a report obtained by NFL Media," writes Patra.

"After failing field sobriety tests, Pierce was arrested and taken to the Towson precinct for processing."

Pierce, 23, was processed and released.

"We are aware of the situation and learning more about it. We take these matters seriously," a Ravens team spokesman said of the incident, per Patra.

The former Temple University standout has struggled to produce consistently since entering the NFL as a third-round pick of the Ravens in the 2012 NFL Draft.

He posted the best numbers of his career his rookie season, gathering 532 yards rushing on 108 attempts for a 4.9 yards per carry average.

His production has steadily declined since.

Last year, Pierce started the season as the top dog in the backfield, but an injury in Week 2 opened the door for diminutive spark plug Justin Forsett to take hold of the workhorse back role and never look back.

Pierce finished the 2014-15 season with just 366 yards on 93 carries.

Considering Pierce's limited skillset and his already precarious position on the Ravens running back depth chart - the team resigned Forsett to a three-year, $9 million contract this offseason - the DUI arrest may spell the end for the once-promising ballcarrier in Baltimore.
