An Indian woman with a rare medical condition that's left her mostly genetically male gave birth to twins on Friday in what doctors are calling the "rarest of rare cases," the Agence France-Presse reported.
The unidentified 32-year-old woman went her entire life not knowing she had an intersex disorder until doctors conducted tests and discovered that 95 percent of her chromosomes are XY, or male.
"She did not undergo puberty and never menstruated," fertility specialist Sunil Jindal told AFP. "When we investigated further we found that she had a very small vagina and an infantile uterus."
Jindal said the patient - who physically looks like a woman - was "flabbergasted" when doctors told her the news.
But she was determined to have children and after a year of intensive hormone treatments to develop her uterus, she was able to conceive. Sperm from her husband, who never left her side, was used to fertilize a donated egg that was implanted in the patient.
"The husband was very supportive and told her 'no matter what you continue to be my wife,' " he told AFP.
His wife gave birth via Caesarean-section to a twin boy and girl weighing about five pounds each.
"This is akin to a male delivering twins," according to Jindal.
"It's nothing short of a medical miracle," Jindal added. "We are really happy we could pull it off."
