Missoni's Plane, Missing Since January, Found Off the Coast of Venezuela

Government officials have found the remains of a plane that disappeared near Venezuela in January, carrying the CEO of Italy's Missoni fashion house along with five other people who were on the plane.

On Thursday, press chief for Venezuela's Interior and Justice Ministry Jorge Galindo posted on his Twitter that crews found an aircraft bearing the tail number YV2615. The plane was confirmed as having gone missing on January 4.

The identification number and date of disappearance coincides with that of the aircraft that went missing near the Los Roques archipelago. That plane was transporting 58-year-old Vittorio Missoni, his longtime friend Maurizia Castiglioni, two of their Italian friends and two crew members from Venezuela.

In February, just one month after the plane disappeared, two pieces of luggage from the aircraft washed up onto the small island of Bonaire.

According to Italy's Foreign Ministry who spoke with USA Today on Thursday, search teams found the plane at 230 feet deep. It had broken into a few pieces, but they were almost completely sure that the plane belonged to the famed Missoni family because the tail number was still intact.

The Missoni family released a public statement from Italy giving thanks to the two governments for their support and help throughout the search. They said they were sure that the investigation to follow would help them find out what led to the devastating crash.

"The possible recovery of the aircraft is being evaluated at this moment in Venezuela," the Missoni statement read.

The statement also mentioned that the plane was identified during day five of the search using oceanographic technology provided by an American ship.

Since Vittorio Missoni's disappearance, Ottavio Missoni, the company's patriarch, passed away.

Amid saddening family developments and deaths, the fashion line showed new collections during Milan's summer fashion week this past weekend.
