A hearse containing a body ready for burial was stolen by a man that was then chased down by grieving friends and relatives on Saturday, the Daily News reported.

A black hearse was idling outside of a Los Angeles church with the body of 19-year-old Jonte Lee Reed in the back. The car was running with the keys in the ignition while the funeral director arranged flowers before guests arrived. He notified Reed's family when he realized the vehicle and casket were missing.

"When I got there, there's no hearse, there's no body," Reed's aunt Johnnie Fortune said. "A lot of people went chasing after the car."

The man was taken into custody after police were called to report the stolen hearse. His mental condition will be evaluated and he will be hit with an auto theft charge.

The casket and hearse were brought back to the church quickly and the services went on as expected. The body seemed to be fine and undisturbed.

Shirley Little, the pastor's wife, said that nothing quite like this has happened in the church's 75-year history, according to the LA Times.
