PS4 Release Date: Sony Unveils Price of Next-Gen Gaming Platform

Sony Computer Entertainment officially unveiled their next-generation platform, the PlayStation 4, at the E3 Expo on Tuesday.

The PS4 is set to hit the United States market for $399 this holiday season.

"We are proud to unveil today the most advanced gaming system ever created, PlayStation 4, which demonstrates everything PlayStation stands for - a relentless focus on the gamer, an inspired community of developers equipped with the most powerful technology, and the long-standing legacy to building worlds without boundaries through one-of-a-kind gaming experiences," said Jack Tretton, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment in a press release.

In the unveiling, Sony also showcased exclusive first and third party content for PS4: PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 3 systems, and a next-generation PlayStation Plus membership program.

"What's equally exciting for us, however, is transforming the PlayStation ecosystem into a stronger, more vibrant destination that enables gamers to engage, share, play, and connect on their terms," Tretton said.

Sony believes the PS4's new sleek, modern design will inspire developers to create the next generation of gaming experiences on their new console that were never before possible. Sony's World Wide Studios announced that they are developing more than 30 PS4 exclusive titles, and 20 of them are planned to release within a year of the launch of the PS4 system.

Some of the titles include the development of "Kingdom Hearts III," "Final Fantasy XV," "Watch_Dogs," "Assassin's Cred IV Black Flag" and 2K Sports' "NBA 2K14."

Gameplay will also be affected by the PlayStation's cloud gaming services, which will be available to the U.S. beginning in 2014. The "cloud" service will provide gamers access to their PS3 and PS4 title catalog when these game will be streamed using Gaikai's proprietary network to deliver immediate gameplay.

Sony announced the PS3 isn't done releasing new titles. Since 2006, the PS3 has launched one gaming blockbuster after the other and will continue to release exclusive "only on" PlayStation content this year, including "Rain," "Gran Turismo 6," "BEYOND: Two Souls," "The Last of Us," "Batman: Arkham Origins" and "Grand Theft Auto V."
