Marijuana, Live Chickens And Explosives Found In SUV After West Virginia Car Crash

A single-car crash on a West Virginia highway Friday morning turned into a bizarre discovery when police found marijuana, explosives and live chickens stashed inside an SUV.

State firefighters were the first to arrive on the scene around 4 a.m. in response to a call about an SUV that rolled over on Interstate 79 near Amma, Metro News reported. In addition to the wounded driver, Seth Grim, authorities found about 40 live chickens that escaped from the vehicle and were running wild in the night.

Firefighters inspected Grim's Ford Explorer and found an AK-47, ammunition and a jar of marijuana in the front seat, WOWK-TV reported.

But when authorities came across the improvised explosive devises, or IEDs, in the back seat, panic ensued and the highway was shut down. The West Virginia State Police Bomb Squad was dispatched to the scene.

The suspected IED's turned out to be altered fireworks, state troopers told Metro News. They have since been destroyed.

The 20-year-old driver was taken to Charleston Area Medical Center where he was treated for a head wound. His chickens, however, were less fortunate because some of them were killed in the crash.

A dog that was also in the SUV, which is suspected of somehow causing the accident, also died, the station reported.

Grim, originally from Pennsylvania, was charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. More charges are expected to be filed against him. In the meantime he is being held at the South Central Regional Jail on $25,000 bond, WOWK-TV reported.

The stretch of Interstate 79 that was closed between exits Wallback and Amma has since been reopened.
