Singing a song which tugs at the heartstrings, country singer Miranda Lambert choked up during her performance at Healing in the Heartland: Relief Benefit Concert. The concert and telethon aimed to raise profits for the United Way of Central Oklahoma May Tornadoes Relief Fund.
Lambert was introduced by her husband Blake Shelton, who was also the host of the event in Oklahoma City on Wednesday night. Her performance of "The House That Built Me" was to raise awareness about the animals affected by the May 20 tornado.
After singing the first verse and chorus, Lambert was overcome by emotion, her eyes welling with tears, and had to take a minute or two to compose herself while the music played. As the crowd cheered her on, she pointed the microphone in their direction, encouraging them to sing for her. She finally managed to master enough control of herself to complete the song, and urged viewers to make a donation.
For those unfamiliar with the song, it was Lambert's first number one hit on the Billboard Hot Country Songs countdown back in 2010. The lyrics of the song are about the narrator revisiting the home she grew up in: "I thought if I could touch this place or feel it, this brokenness inside me might start healing. Out here it's like I'm someone else. I thought that maybe I could find myself. If I could just come in, I swear I'll leave. Won't take nothing but a memory from the house that built me," says the chorus.
Lambert's emotional performance at the Oklahoma benefit concert drew positive reactions from others in the music space. "Just re-watched @mirandalambert on #HealOK. Love your tender heart, Miranda - thank you for sharing your love for OK & those sweet animals," tweeted Sheryl Crow. "Wow @mirandalambert What a moving performance!" reads Dustin Lynch's tweet.
The Healing in the Hartland benefit concert also featured performances by Reba McEntire, Vince Gill, Darius Rucker, Ryan Tedder and Luke Bryan. Shelton's fellow coach on "The Voice", Usher, joined him to sing "Home".
