Amazon Germany posted a pre-order page for Microsoft's new Xbox One gaming and entertainment console Wednesday morning that was complete with a price tag of 599 euros.
Since then, Amazon U.K. has also posted a pre-order listing for the Xbox One with a price set at £589.99. To put these prices into perspective, that puts the new Xbox One system between $700 and $900.
The price posted on Amazon Germany converts to roughly $775.47 and the price posted from Amazon U.K. converts to $892.06. In any case, prices for the new console seem significantly higher than its predecessor the Xbox 360 which started between $300 and $400.
Microsoft has not yet confirmed these prices in any way. It would not be the first time that Amazon has leaked information like this, however, most of those cases turn out to be an error or mistake on the part of the website.
The high price comes as distressing news to many Xbox fans who were hoping that the change from the 360 to the Xbox One would be seamless and somewhat affordable. With the initial leaked price tag putting the console in such a high price range, many casual gamers are hoping that Amazon is mistaking.
Amazon does have a habit of setting pre-order prices for games higher than what they actually plan on selling them for on the day of release. This is simply so that they can lower the price just before the release giving consumers the illusion of a savings. Thus, the currently listed prices, if they are legitimate, can be expected to go down as the release of the Xbox One draws closer.
There is still no word yet on the price of the Xbox One's greatest competitor, the Sony Playstation 4, although Amazon has that listed for pre order at £599.99. When the Playstation 3 came out it had a significantly higher price tag than the 360. It is unclear whether the PS4's price will be comparable, higher or if the company will aim to undercut the competition by going lower as Sony, like Microsoft, has confirmed nothing so far.
