The Pentagon on Thursday quickly shot down reports that the U.S. launched airstrikes on militant targets in Iraq.
The New York Times reported Thursday evening that America's military dropped at least two bombs in the seized towns of Gwer and Mahmour targeting fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
"Pres reports that US has conducted airstrikes in Iraq completely false," Rear Admiral John Kirby, press secretary for the Pentagon, tweeted Thursday. "No such action taken."
The NY Times report, stemming from another report from a Kurdish station, came after the Obama administration announced it was considering airstrikes against the jihadist group.
Airdrops were also considered to help the nearly 40,000 Yazidi religious minorities that fled to Mount Sinjar in the north after receiving death threats from ISIS, according to The Guardian.
