A Michigan man is hoping the public will help him raise $20,000 so he can get rid of his 100-pound scrotum.

Dan Maurer, 39, suffers from a rare condition called scrotal lymphedema that's caused his scrotum to grow abnormally large. After living with the extra weight for nearly a decade, Maurer is hoping to raise the money to pay for a California surgeon to remove the humiliating growth.

"When I go out, people do look," Maurer, of Battle Creek, told ABC affiliate WZZM13. "They try to be polite, you can see when something's not right."

The surgery is risky, but Maurer is willing to go through with it to improve his intimate relationship with his wife of 20 years.

"I don't see myself as worth it, but she is," Maurer said of his wife Mindy. "That's why I'm going through with this."

Maurer was in his late 20s when he noticed his scrotum was getting larger. His doctor told him to lose weight, yet as he began exercising, his scrotum got bigger and bigger.

Maurer even got a second opinion from the University of Michigan Health System. They also told him to lose weight. But the problem worsened until one day Maurer ended up in the hospital being treated for a cyst that broke inside his scrotum, WZZM13 reported. Doctors were still unable to diagnose him.

Two years of recovery at a wound center passed before Maurer found out what was wrong. He happened to be watching a show called "The Man With the 132-Pound Scrotum" on TLC that featured someone with a very similar problem.

"That's when I found out that's what I have," Maurer told WZZM13. The condition causes blockages in his lymphatic vessels, resulting in the massive swelling.

Maurer sprang into action and now has a GoFundMe page set up to raise $20,000 for the surgery. He has an appointment in California scheduled for July 25. As of Wednesday Maurer has raised $11,367.

In the meantime, large scrotum or not, Maurer's wife said she isn't going anywhere.

"I haven't had marital relations with my husband in 7 years," Mindy told the station. "When you say those vows, you either mean them or you don't. I meant them."
