A producer for ABC News who has changed gender three times has now lost her job due to "performance-related issues," the New York Daily News reported.
Dawn Ennis was born male but switched his gender in 2013, a change that eventually ended his 17-year marriage with his wife. For three months Ennis showed up for work at ABC News dressed as a woman. But then Ennis went back to being Don Ennis, claiming his ex-wife made him become a woman.
Ennis was fired last month, several weeks after he switched to being a woman again, according to the Daily News.
ABC News did not grant the Daily News' request for comment. But an industry source told the newspaper that Ennis' firing is not related to her constant gender-switching.
The situation began in May 2013 when Ennis went to work donning a black dress and wig. Ennis said she was going through an "unusual hormone imbalance" and felt better as a woman.
"This is not a game of dress-up, or make believe," Ennis, from Connecticut, said in a statement obtained by the newspaper. "It is my affirmation of who I now am and what I must do to be happy, in response to a soul-crushing secret that my wife and I have been dealing with for more than seven years."
Ennis, a father of three, separated from his wife and continued on as Dawn. But three months later Ennis came to work dressed as a man. He said he had amnesia and told his co-workers he was "unabashedly male" in his mind, according to the Daily News.
Ennis said his wife made him wear a wig and gave him an ID card that identified him as "Dawn." He also said all of his memories had returned with the exception of his female persona.
In May, Don was Dawn Ennis again. She was sacked a few weeks later.
The Daily News could not immediately reach Ennis for comment.
