Office for iPad Reaches 27 Million Downloads in 46 Days

Microsoft's Office suite for iPad, which includes popular apps such as Excel, PowerPoint and Word, has already reached a record total of 27 million downloads, just 46 days after its release.

The Office app was reportedly downloaded 12 million times in April. One month later, that number has reached a total of 27 million downloads. That tops out to about an average of 587,000 downloads per day.

So far, Word for iPad remains the most popular app in the Office suite. When ranked together with the other free iPad apps, Word occupies the fourth position. Excel and PowerPoint, on the other hand, dropped to 22nd and 26th places respectively.

In the United States, Word sits at the 11th place and is one of the top 100 apps among 109 countries. Google Docs lag behind at the 23rd place in the United States on the Apple iPad, Techcrunch reported.

Microsoft describes the apps as "freemium" in which users are required to have an in-app subscription to enjoy the full-software package. Viewing documents is free though editing, and can only be used after purchasing an Office 365 subscription.

According to Apple Insider, part of the tech giant's policy for in-app purchases provides a 30 percent discount on its subscription for first time users. Subscribers have the option of choosing between an annual payment scheme of $99 or a monthly payment of $9.99 for Office 365.

Apple users have been downloading more of Microsoft on the iOS platform, enabling Microsoft to stay in the lead with Dropbox and Google trailing behind. The company saw an increase in OneDrive usage and sales boost of its Office 365, the latter being part of Microsoft's cross-platform, cloud and mobile-focused business suite.
