17 Puppies Dumped Near Indiana Dunes Found and Now Safe At Lakeshore PAWS Shelter

Karen Read was in her car on State Park Road which is east of Indiana Highway 49 when she just had to stop. While looking out of her window she thought she spotted a raccoon. A second look proved it was something totally different.

“I saw a mother dog and countless puppies,” she said according to the Northwest Indiana Times.

She had discovered 17 mixed lab puppies along the road near the Indiana Dunes, according to The Chicago Tribune.

A person in a gold SUV apparently left the puppies and their mother on the side of the road and drove way once Read was approaching, she said.

The puppies are safe at a shelter in Valparaiso.

"They're great little puppies," said Ashley Hill, dog coordinator at the shelter called Lakeshore PAWS. "They're hilarious."

The puppies’ ages span from to 6 to 12 weeks old.

Read said she arrived just at just the right time. If she had come minutes later the puppies might have been in danger.

"I'm glad I came when I did. We have coyotes, raccoons and possums out there,” she explained. “They'd be killed."

According to the shelter's Facebook page they have recieved so much support and interest in the puppies that they are no longer taking applications for adoption.

"We're hoping to have everyone come by Saturday and pick a puppy," said Hill.

The Porter County Sheriff Department is requesting help from the public in locating whoever dumped the puppies and their mother.
