Rumors suggest that Microsoft is set to release its Surface Mini this coming May.
Recently, a Chinese company published listings for accessories intended for the Surface Mini. The accessories include a smart cover and a keyboard folio case that comes with a detachable Bluetooth keyboard. The product descriptions for both accessories say that they are for the Surface Mini and will be in stock by May 18.
This, along with some other industry rumors, implied that the tech giant might be preparing to launch the Surface Mini soon. In 2012, talks about the Surface Mini occurred after the company unveiled the Surface RT. According to experts, the listing made by Vostrostone, the Chinese company, could be true since Microsoft has a history of discussing their upcoming products with third parties.
The Surface Mini was thought to be released along with the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 last September 2013. However, Paul Thurrott, a Windows blogger was correct that that the release was delayed which was the same forecast given by Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet. They reported that the Surface Mini will be unveiled in May 2014.
According to the InformationWeek, the Surface Mini will come with a stylus. Last year, industry experts also claimed that the device will have a Qualcomm ARM processor and is likely to run on Windows RT 8.1. The device will not be able to support desktop apps but will be one of the front runners of Window's ARM-based devices.
Since their launch, Surface devices that are on the market showed a poor performance in terms of sales numbers but it quickly increased during the holidays due to new models and price cuts. Although Windows is a household name in the technology field, its tablets represent a small proportion of the whole market. Garner, a research firm, stated that tablets made by Windows accounts for 2.1 percent of the market in 2013. In December 2013, IDC claimed a higher estimate at 3.4 percent.
