Big Glo Dead: Chicago Rapper and Chief Keef’s Cousin Shot 10 Times in Englewood after Signing First Major Record Deal

An up-and-coming Chicago rapper was shot to death in a section of Chicago called Englewood. Big Glo, who was rapper Chief Keef's cousin, was gunned down around 9:45 p.m. on Apr. 9, Chicago police said.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Big Glo (whose real name was Mario Hess) was shot to death by two people who opened fire on him. He was rushed to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said more than two dozen shell casings were found at the scene, just south of 56th Street on Elizabeth Avenue. According to the newspaper, the rapper was shot as many as 10 times. A 28-year-old man was also shot and taken to the same hospital. The man was said to be in critical condition. It's not clear what his relationship with the rapper was.

Big Glo's manager, Renaldo Reuben, told reporters that he was trying to get the 33-year-old rapper out of the area, which is known for its violence.

"It's a lot of crime and violence in Chicago, these rap guys are being targeted, so you know, just trying to get him outside the neighborhood," the manager said, according to the Chicago Tribune. "He's from the streets."

"He was basically trying to just get his rap career together because that's a good opportunity," Reuben added. "They gave him some money up front. It was a good chance for him to get himself out of the hood."

According to police, Big Glo had many run-ins with the law and appeared in Cook County courts at least 36 times for separate cases.

In September 2002, he was charged with manufacturing and delivering cocaine. He pleaded guilty and served a year in jail. A few years later in 2007, he pleaded guilty in a weapons violations case and was sentenced to two years in jail. Big Glo also had run-ins in 2008, 2009 and 2013.

Last year the rapper (who also used the nickname Blood Money) was featured on Chief Keef's song "F**k Rehab" and had just signed with Interscope Records
