Dropbox has launched a new gallery app called Carousel, a new Mailbox for Android, and new features for Dropbox for Business. These are believed to further promote that its services are not just about storing and sharing files.
The new gallery app Carousel for mobile lets users scroll through their photos and send those to their friends in an instant. It also stores photos privately that can be shared on a specific audience-a feature not available in Facebook.
However, Gentry Underwood, CEO and co-founder of Mailbox, decided to improve Dropbox because prior to the update, Dropbox was not a great app to view the stored photos and clips.
"What people want in mobile is dedicated apps that do one thing and do them really, really well," Underwood said. "Swiss army knives lose to specialized tools every time," said Underwood to the Wall Street Journal.
Furthermore, Dropbox CEO Drew Houston believes that the Carousel will address the viewing issues although he also admitted that beating Facebook is still unlikely.
"There's always been some overlap with our services," said Houston to WSJ. "But when you look at what we're doing, we feel like Carousel is doing something completely new."
But "I don't think anyone is going to use Facebook less because of Carousel," he added.
The all-new Dropbox for Business, on the other hand, is redesigned with added security and sharing features, like remote wipes, account transfer, and sharing audit logs, which were tested with a few users last year. It gives administrators more control over their company's data.
The remote wipe assists the user in the protection of the user or company's private details while sharing audit logs helps the admin track how details are being accessed. Account transfer, on the other hand, helps the admin sustain business continuity.
Dropbox's next step is to release Project Harmony later this year. Project Harmony is an initiative that will let administrators see the changes made on a file, chat with their colleagues, and save copies in sync.
