Benzino, a Boston-based rapper and star of 'Love & Hip Hop Atlanta," was shot multiple times on Mar 29 as he drove his car in his mother's funeral procession, WHDH.com reports. According to reports, Benzino (real name Raymond Scott) was allegedly gunned down by his nephew as he drove his SUV to his mother's funeral in Duxbury, Mass. His mother died on Mar. 20.
According to Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Crus, Gai Scott pulled his car up alongside Benzino's SUV and opened fire. The 48-year-old rapper reportedly got out the car and was taken to Duxbury Police Station by a passerby who saw Benzino bleeding on the side of the road. After he arrived at the police station, the rapper was taken to a local hospital, where he is said to be in stable condition.
The family went ahead with the funeral but said that there had been tension between Benzino and his cousin for a while now. According to TMZ, there was a nasty argument between family members in the funeral procession.
Father William Williams said that at first no one knew there was a shooting until the hearse arrived with blood on it.
"I said to one of the guys, 'There's blood on the hearse.' There was an incident along the way," Father Williams said. "The family there. They were mourning somebody they loved who died so they didn't want to talk to cops and robbers."
According to TMZ, Scott was charged with armed assault and the intent to murder. He will be arraigned in Plymouth District Court on Mar. 31. Rapper Stevie J took to Instagram to tell fans that Benzino was doing fine and is expected to make a full recovery.
"God is good," he captioned a photo of the rapper laying in a hospital bed.
