Amazon Set-top-box Game Console Looks like Chromecast

Amazon is expected to launch its own game console and sources claim that this will be in the form of a dongle or stick, similar to Google Chromecast's design.

According to sources of TechCrunch, the gadget is being developed by Lab126 and is predicted to engage in a competition with Playstatiion and Xbox. Other sources believe that the console allow users to stream PC game titles.

The design of the console came as no surprise, as other names in the gaming industry like Roku and Chromecast has used the stick or dongle game console. Streaming the games, on the other hand, seems to be one of Amazon's advantages in attracting customers as they already sell digital game downloads for Mac and PC devices from their website.

Allowing users to stream the games will allow the online retailer's gaming console to effectively penetrate the market. Although OnLive has already employed this strategy, the failure of their enterprise was the result of the expenses of their operation. Amazon will not have such problems for it has all the resources needed to launch and sustain its gaming console. The game titles are said to be streamed from Amazon at 30fps, the average speed of the majority of online video sites.

TechCrunch also reported that the game console might be added as benefit for an Amazon Prime Member, a move which could attract more users to avail of its Premium services.

The content of the Amazon set top box are not yet revealed but the sources claimed that Amazon is likely to use this to gain more users of their Amazon MP3 and Amazon Instant Video services.

It was also predicted that the newest gaming piece may have the edge over other gaming consoles in the market; however, it could push Amazon to a fierce competition with Stream, which is also a key name in the industry.

The gaming piece is still at its early stages of development and the features included in its final version are not yet known.
