SCRABBLE and Merriam-Webster announced that they will be updating the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary and will include a new word voted by players during the SCRABBLE Word Showdown.
This revision is the first in nine years and is expected to include thousands of new words to the official dictionary. Aside from these new words, Scrabble will also include a new word voted by fans and nominations for this will start on March 12 and will end on March 28. Nominations should be submitted to the Hasbro Game Night Facebook page.
The Merriam-Webster's Official SCRABBLE Player's Dictionary is the official guide used by SCRABBLE players to decide if a word is "play eligible" or not.
Possible words that could be nominated are fan favorites that are not on the list yet or a recently-popularized word that has emerged since the last update of the official dictionary in 2005.
SCRABBLE and Merriam-Webster will streamline the entries and will announce the top sixteen words on April 2 for the SCRABBLE Word Showdown, which will be done by brackets. Fans can vote for their bets on the Hasbro Game Night Facebook page until there is only one word left.
The ultimate winner of the Word Showdown will be unveiled on April 10 and will earn a spot in the Merriam-Webster's Official SCRABBLE Players Dictionary. The winning word will also be an official playable word for any game of SCRABBLE.
"The SCRABBLE Word Showdown will let fans nominate and vote on words that are fun and relevant for today's players," Hasbro's vice president for marketing, Jonathan Berkowitz, stated in a press release.
"We are excited to see which word rises to the top and makes its way into The Official SCRABBLE Players Dictionary," he added.
The updated dictionary will hit the market on August 2014. The selected word, on the other hand, will be made "play eligible" in electronic versions of the game including SCRABBLE on iPhone, iPad, Android, and Facebook.
