An Australian shopping mall in Sydney was turned into a killing field Saturday when an attacker armed with a long knife began randomly slashing people. At least six victims and the attacker were killed.

The unnamed attacker entered the Westfield Bondi Junction mall late afternoon. Those not killed were seriously or critically injured, said police. A nine-month-old baby was among those stabbed. 

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the murderous attack a "horrific act of violence indiscriminately targeting innocent people going about an ordinary Saturday."

Police have not yet revealed a motive.

The attacker was killed by a pursing female police officer who fatally shot him when he turned to confront her, police said.

The Australian Federal Police and Australian Security Intelligence Organization are investigating the attack.
