London's Royal Festival Hall glittered with stars and glamour on Sunday as the 2024 British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards unfolded, with one notable absence. Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge and President of BAFTA, graced the event solo, as Kate Middleton continues her recovery from abdominal surgery.

The BAFTA Awards, often likened to the Oscars for their celebration of excellence in film, drew attention not only for its nominees but also for the prince's lone appearance. Typically accompanied by his wife, Catherine, Prince William navigated the red carpet and the evening's proceedings without her presence.

Britain's Prince William, Prince of Wales, president of Bafta, attends the BAFTA British Academy Film Awards at the Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre, in London, on February 18, 2024.

Addressing well-wishers on the red carpet, Prince William expressed regret for Catherine's absence, acknowledging her fondness for the BAFTAs.

"I am sorry Catherine's not here, she does love the BAFTAs," he remarked, according to the reports.

He also shared candidly with attendees that he hadn't watched as many nominated films as usual, citing "other things on my mind."

"I haven't seen Barbie yet," William mentioned to fans on the red carpet, as reported by the Daily Mail, to which they advised him, "You need to see it."

Seated amongst esteemed guests like Cate Blanchett and sharing moments with sports icon David Beckham, Prince William exemplified grace and composure throughout the evening.

Dressed impeccably in a classic velvet tuxedo and a pair of patent brogues, he engaged with fans, posed for selfies, and exchanged pleasantries with fellow attendees.

Duchess Kate's Recovery Progress

Despite his personal circumstances, Prince William fulfilled his role as BAFTA President with dignity, emphasizing his commitment to catching up on the nominated films alongside his recuperating wife.

"Oppenheimer," an epic film by Christopher Nolan, clinched the prestigious Best Film award at the ceremony, triumphing over other noteworthy contenders.

The Duke of Cambridge's attendance at the BAFTAs followed a period of adjustment as he resumed his public-facing role after tending to his family. His return coincided with news of his father, King Charles III's, cancer diagnosis.

While Prince William shone at the BAFTAs, attention also lingered on Kate Middleton's recovery journey.

Having undergone surgery in January, the Duchess of Cambridge continues to make progress after returning home, as confirmed by Kensington Palace. However, she is unlikely to resume her public duties until after Easter, as per medical advice.

According to a statement issued by Kensington Palace to CNN, Middleton is anticipated to resume her public engagements in April.
