Boris Johnson's representative said he met with former US President Donald Trump this week to discuss Ukraine matters.

  • Trump has been criticized for his Russia-Ukraine stance.

According to Johnson's representative, former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson held a meeting with ex-United States President Donald Trump this week about Ukraine and the "importance of Ukrainian victory" in the ongoing war.

Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Boris Johnson, who was ousted from office last year, has set out on a cross-country campaign to win over leading Republicans.

Two Controversial Leaders Meet Again

Pro-Ukraine think tanks hosted a private lunch in Texas where Johnson spoke to lawmakers, fundraisers, and business executives on the United States' continued support for Ukraine, according to Politico. Subsequently, Johnson was supposed to have dinner with Donald Trump, who has been criticized for his position on the Russia-Ukraine war.

In a recent CNN town hall, Trump avoided saying outright that he wanted Ukraine to win the conflict, focusing instead on his objective of putting a stop to the deaths of both Russians and Ukrainians within 24 hours if he wins the US presidency again.

A representative for Boris Johnson confirmed that conversations concerning Ukraine were a primary subject of conversation during the Thursday meeting between Trump and Johnson. The location of the discussion has yet to be made public.

Johnson used to be referred to by Trump as a "friend" and even dubbed "Britain Trump," but their political trajectories have diverged over the years.

In an earlier interview with GB News, Donald Trump slammed Johnson's administration, accusing it of moving to the "far left" because of measures like its backing for wind farms and environmental projects. However, their meeting this week offered a chance to discuss Ukraine-related issues and find common ground.

The two former heads of state had already met each other when they attended the 2019 G7 conference in France.

With a promise of $46.65 billion in weaponry and equipment over the previous year, the United States has been Ukraine's most significant military assistance contributor. The BBC reported that the UK is the second-largest donor, having pledged $7.16 billion.

'Partygate' Update

Over a year ago, Boris Johnson was fined by the police for a June 2020 birthday party incident. In addition, more than 100 others received penalties for activities in and near Downing Street.

The "Partygate" scandal contributed to Johnson's resignation as prime minister. He has considered the possibility of returning, however. The MPs are investigating Johnson on the privileges committee to see whether he misled the House of Commons when he said Downing Street followed all COVID-19 rules.

Keir Starmer, the Labour Party leader, recently reacted to Johnson's behavior, saying concerns remain regarding the Chequers claims and why they were not raised sooner. After looking into diary entries about visitors to Chequers during the outbreak that Johnson's legal counsel submitted as part of the COVID-19 probe, the Cabinet Office recently sent new misconduct claims to the police, as per a report from The Guardian.
