Hungary slams the West's constant criticism of the country's democratic and cultural issues and discourages the small European country's right-wing government from supporting NATO's buildup against Russia.
  • Hungary issued a pushback as Brussels and NATO have dissatisfaction with its behavior
  • Budapest says West's attempts of influencing its decisions are not welcome
  • The national affairs of Hungary were criticized because of supporting Russia

The Hungarian foreign minister has stated that the country is sick of western criticism. In an interview, Peter Szijjártó, the Hungarian foreign minister, noted that the West's criticism of democratic and cultural concerns in Hungary impedes collaboration, particularly regarding NATO and Russia.

In recent years, Budapest and Brussels have clashed on several topics. The ruling far-right Fidesz party was accused of adopting an authoritarian turn, squandering EU money, and compromising the bloc's strategy toward the Ukrainian conflict.

Hungarian FM Mocks West's Steady Criticism for Hungary

Szijjártó stated that Hungary has not voted to allow Finland and Sweden to join NATO because Hungarian legislators are fed up with their interference in the country's internal affairs. The foreign minister stated that it took a lot of work to anticipate when Sweden's application for membership would be accepted.

Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the Nordic duo submitted NATO membership applications. As per Euro News, they have struggled to be admitted thus far, as all 30 members must first consent. The European Union, comprised of 21 NATO members, has suspended billions of dollars in aid to Budapest, accusing nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban of undermining media freedom and LGBT+ rights.

Meanwhile, his government has been criticized for permitting widespread corruption and co-opting public institutions. In a resolution, MEPs stated that under Orban, Hungary has become "a hybrid system of electoral autocracy," undermining the core ideals of the EU.

Such criticism made it difficult for Hungary to support the NATO membership applications of Finland and Sweden, according to Szijjártó. Skeptics assert that Hungary has only sought financial concessions. In response to Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, Szijjátó stated that his nation's commitment to peace did not entail enabling Russia to retain the land it now holds.

According to AP News, Szijjártó stated that ties with the United States peaked under former President Donald Trump. His administration had a more challenging time under President Joe Biden.

Szijjártó said in flawless, practically accent-free English that Hungary had an "obviously rightist, right-wing, Christian Democratic, conservative, patriotic administration." He then continued using terminology that was known to millions of Americans.

FM Compares Trump and Biden's Administration

Trump's approval of Hungary's actions toward its population was essential to developing this friendship. The government has prohibited distributing materials to children that promote or show homosexuality or gender transition.

Human rights groups and European lawmakers have criticized the bill as an attack on the LGBT community in Hungary. Szijjártó stated that Trump was more receptive to such measures than the administration of Biden.

He never sought to force his will on others. He never intended to force us to alter our perspective on the family. He never asked us to change our perspective on migration. He never asked us to vary our stance on social concerns, according to Szijjártó.

He said that Trump's stance toward Russia would be seen more favorably by some parties now. During Trump's presidency, Russia did not launch "any assault against anyone," according to Szijjártó.

Skeptics assert that Hungary was only attempting to make profitable concessions. In response to Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, Szijjátó stated that his nation's commitment to peace does not include enabling Russia to retain the land it presently holds.

In March, Orban stated that Hungary would remain neutral in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and continue opposing sanctions detrimental to Budapest's interests. According to Local News, Hungary, which shares a border with Ukraine, approaches the conflict differently than the EU.

Hungary has barred supplies of armaments from its territory to Ukraine, made energy deals with Russia as far as Budapest, offered humanitarian help to Kyiv, and accepted many refugees.
