Apple has put a patent on a pair of health-monitoring headphones, just one month after LG announced its release of the Heart Rate headphones at January's CES.
According to a report by tech blog Trusted Reviews, Apple has successfully filed for a special kind of "sports monitoring system for headphones, earbuds and/or headsets."
The tech giant has reportedly been pushing for this new gadget for at least seven years; this new patent will override an initial version filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in 2007.
Much like LG's version, Apple's heart-healthy headphones would live inside of a pair of earbuds. But special components set Apple's listening device apart from the rest, including a head gesture control feature.
A sensor inside the headphone would be able to log information concerning your perspiration levels, body temperature and heart stats. The patent doesn't delve into great detail just how this aspect of the gadget works, but merely states that most of the information would come from the sensors' contact with human skin.
Meanwhile, the head movement control piece logs the wearer's physical activity. This bit is made especially for hands-free use while exercising - according to initial drawings of the headphones, users can change a song or turn up the volume but shifting or tilting their heads a certain way.
The gesture feature can be turned off if the user plans on doing extraneous workouts with lots of conflicting motion, Trusted Reviews reported.
There will also apparently be a wireless version of the earbud, which would serve as a Bluetooth and a way to connect with your smartphone remotely.
The patent advertises this health-tracking headphone set as a multi-faceted answer to other workout-accompanying devices.
Although it hasn't yet been confirmed, it seems the headphones might come with an accelerometer that would keep a running count of your movement information.
