West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin III went against the majority of his party on Tuesday, calling Vice President Kamala Harris' claim that the Mexican border is secure "dead wrong."

West Virginia Democratic Senator Joe Manchin told Fox News presenter Bret Baier that Vice President Kamala Harris was "dead wrong" to assert that America's border is safe.

While enormous numbers of migrants continue to flow through the southern border, Harris told 'Meet the Press' presenter Chuck Todd that the border is secure.

Kamala Harris Claims US-Mexico Border is Secure

"The border is secure," the vice president added, "but we also have a broken immigration system, particularly in the previous four years before we got in, and it has to be fixed."

According to US Customs and Border Protection data, almost 2 million southwest land border interactions occurred between October 2021 and July 2022. Todd probed the vice president on the topic, asking whether she is "confident" that the border is safe. CBP news releases frequently emphasize the capture of previously deported individuals who have committed horrible crimes.

According to a CBP press release, officials recently apprehended a man who was "convicted of lewd and lascivious activities with a juvenile in South Carolina and sentenced to five years in prison" in 2019. That person, who was deported in May this year, was detained on September 2nd.

Similarly, Border Patrol officers apprehended a person on September 7 who had been deported in June after being "convicted, in December 2021 in California, of sexual or lascivious actions with a minor under 14 years of age," according to another CBP news release. Per The Blaze, cases of previously deported felons unlawfully reentering the US highlight the crucial significance of border security as a matter of public safety.

Manchin cited the 2013 'Gang of Eight' immigration measure, co-authored by then-Sen. Sens. John McCain, Jeff Flake of Arizona, Robert Menendez of New Jersey, and Charles Schumer of New York, was the finest opportunity to protect the border thus far.

Manchin Defends Inflation Reduction Act

In reaction to Biden's "celebration" of inflation reduction at the White House, Manchin defended the Inflation Reduction Act as a carefully crafted arrangement that, in one aspect, will allow for expanded domestic energy production, despite the progressive side of his party's opposition.

In response, host Bret Baier stated that, despite its title, the measure is still "not reducing inflation." Manchin said, referencing the energy section, that if more products entered the market through higher production, it may, at the very least, cut inflation in the US energy industry.

In terms of the impending continuing-resolution government funding package, Manchin said he is already resigned to the fact that left-wing members of his caucus, such as Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, would not support it if it has a substantial fossil-fuel energy component. In that situation, he expressed optimism that a dozen Republicans would join him and the less liberal Democrats in passing the resolution, as per Fox News.
