For everyone's information, Voldemort isn't the only notorious dark wizard in J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World of imagination. Before He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named became a thing, there was Gellert Grindelwald, and the new Harry Potter series Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will be exploring his story even more.

Grindelwald's intentions

Johnny Depp's take on the character made his debut in the very first Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film. The movie opened with a glimpse at some of the dark wizard's recent attacks in Europe and concluded with the reveal that he had been hiding out in New York under the disguise of Auror Percival Graves [Colin Farrell]. While the movie didn't truly delved deep into his motivations, it did introduce him as being the primary antagonist and someone whose main goal is to have the wizarding community come out into the open and dominate the non-magic community.

Grindelwald will be the main antagonist

With J.K. Rowling confirming that she is planning to have the 5th Fantastic Beasts film take place in the year 1945, it's become clearer and clearer that Grindelwald is definitely going to be the main force of antagonism in the entire movie series. It's a pretty smart move, considering that he was the Voldemort before Voldemort was around. In fact, referring to the books, the most famous battle in history, before Harry fought Voldemort, was in 1945 between Gellert Grindelwald and Albus Dumbledore.

Grindelwald's History

Gellert Grindelwald was born in Eastern Europe and went to school at Durmstrang Institute in Scandinavia. There he was drawn to the Dark Arts, and was later expelled for what Dumbledore described to Harry Potter as "twisted experiments." While being there, he became obsessed with the Deathly Hallows, which is, again, another focal point of the final Harry Potter novel/films. He believed that by obtaining all of it, it will make him invincible.

The Grindelwald-Dumbledore relationship

The connection between Grindelwald and Dumbledore is something that was also explored in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, where a young version of Grindelwald even appeared in the film, played by Jamie Campbell Bower in a seeming flashback sequence. These flashbacks explore the complicated relationship between Grindelwald and Dumbledore that looks like it will be a focal point of the Fantastic Beasts series.
