In an interview with Glamour magazine Gabrielle Union opened up about the secrets to a happy relationship. The actress and her now-fiancé Dwyane Wade have made headlines recently after it was revealed that Wade had fathered a baby while he was on break with Union.

Despite all the media attention surrounding their relationship and Wade's new baby, the couple has stood by each other's side. Union recently dished about her surprise engagement on "Live! With Kelly and Michael" saying that Wade's sons and nephew helped plan the entire proposal.

Now the 41-year-old is opening up about her relationship with the Miami Heat's player. She explained to Glamour why she and Wade got back together and how they keep their romance solid.

One of the first pieces of advice the "Bing Mary Jane" star gives is for women to remove any preconceived notions they have about a man and to disregard their "type."

"When I met Dwyane, his 'resume' looked like crap: athlete, going through a divorce, nine years younger than me. None of that screamed, 'Let's have a lasting relationship,'' she explained. "Then, after I had a heart-crushing breakup with yet another immature jerk, I thought it can't be any worse if I date a fetus. Let's just see what happens. When I put my preconceived notions to the side, I found someone cool."

In the interview the actress didn't specifically address the stories about getting back together with Wade even after he got another woman pregnant, but said she believes people should not completely write off their ex without really thinking it through.

Union told Glamour that she feels it's important to remember what the original issue was that led to the split and decide if it's a deal breaker or not.

"[When Dwyane and I broke up briefly in 2013] it was because of distance and scheduling," she said adding that her work schedule didn't allow her any time to take a break. "I missed some quality togetherness we desperately needed."

Union said during their break she took some time to get her priorities straight and decided she wouldn't put her career before her relationship.
