Bump, Flock Apps Going Dark Soon

Google-acquired Bump and Flock apps are going dark soon.

David Lieb, Bump CEO and co-founder announced on Wednesday that Google is shutting down its acquired applications Bump and Flock soon.

Google has acquired both apps back in September 2012. However, the tech giant decided to have both pulled out from Google Play Store and Apple App Store at the end of January 2014. Users who like to export their data will have until January 31 to do so. After January, the app will no longer be working and accessible and all user data will be removed.

Lieb said in a blog post, “We’ve taken much care to make sure that you can retain any data you have in Bump and Flock. At any point in the next 30 days, simply open either app and and follow the instructions for exporting your data. You’ll then receive an email with a link containing all of your data (photos, videos, contacts, etc) from Bump or Flock.”

Bump, which permits users to swap over files by tapping their smartphones simultaneously, was a well-liked app on Samsung’s Galaxy S3 smartphone. However, since the Bump team will now be working on different projects, they decided to dump bump and Flock, the photo-aggregating app also created by the company.

Lieb said, “We are now deeply focused on our new projects within Google, and we’ve decided to discontinue Bump and Flock. On January 31, 2014, Bump and Flock will be removed from the App Store and Google Play. After this date, neither app will work, nor all user data will be deleted.”

Nonetheless, Lieb and his team are still grateful with all the support and enthusiasm their outgoing applications have received, saying, “we’ve been inspired and humbled by the millions of people who have used Bump and Flock. Your feedback, enthusiasm, and support has brought much meaning to our work, and we want to thank you all for that.”
