Newly-promoted team Alaves delivered a shocking loss to heavy favorite FC Barcelona giving them the first defeat in La Liga's 2016/17 Season.

Adding insult to injury was the minnows Alaves overpowered Barcelona right at the heart of the home of the Barca warriors,  Camp Nou.

Luis Enrique's move to rest lots of players ahead of their Champions League encounter with Celtic has apparently backfired.

Resting Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Andres Iniesta at the first half provided the  Basque men the much-needed opportunity as Deyverson find a crack at Barcelona's defense in the 39 minutes.

Barcelona were level within the first minute of the second half as Jeremy Mathieu headed home from a corner.

But within four minutes, Mascherano gifted Alaves the lead again with a mis-hit in the box, Ibai Gomez pouncing on the error to score.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid remained on top of La Liga following with Cristiano Ronaldo returning at Santiago Bernabeu after a 60-day injury break.

The Portugal striker needed just six minutes to get on the scoresheet to help Real Madrid 5-2 win over Osasuna.

He then provided a fine scooped assist for Danilo to double the lead before Sergio Ramos' fine header ensured they went into the half-time break three goals up.

Within the hour, Pepe had made it 4-0 and Luka Modric hit another to finish the game off with a low shot from outside the box.

Oriol Riera got one back shortly after and although Kiko Casilla saved a late penalty, David Garcia added another consolation before Tano was sent off.
