Former U.S. women's soccer star Abby Wambach was arrested early Sunday morning in Portland, Ore., and charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants (DUII) after failing a field sobriety test.

Police said that the 35-year-old was taken to Portland's Central Precinct and also failed a breathalyzer test. She was booked into the Multnomah Count Jail at 2:02 a.m. PST and was released on her own recognizance.

The Portland Police Bureau said Wambach was "polite and cooperative throughout the investigation."

She was pulled over at 11:05 p.m. PST in her 2014 Range Rover after a Central Precinct sergeant saw that she failed to stop at a red light at Southwest 13th avenue and Taylor Street.

Wambach released a statement on Facebook addressing the incident, which you can view here.

"Last night I was arrested for DUII in Portland after dinner at a friend's house," she wrote.

"Those that know me, know that I have always demanded excellence from myself. I have let myself and others down," she added. "I take full responsibility for my actions. This is all on me. I promise that I will do whatever it takes to ensure that my horrible mistake is never repeated.

"I am so sorry to my family, friends, fans and those that look to follow a better example."

The leading scorer in U.S. soccer history retired after the USWNT won the 2015 World Cup with a 5-2 victory over Japan. Wambach logged 297 minutes in seven World Cup matches and scored one goal. She played her final professional game on Dec. 16 in New Orleans against China.

Her decorated 21-year career features two World Cup triumphs ('99, '15), two Olympic Gold Medals ('04, '12), a FIFA Women's World Player of the Year ('12) and 155 goals (73 international), among other achievements.

However, her life after soccer isn't off to a great start with news of the DUII.
