New York College Student Killed After Fraternity Hazing Event, Investigators Say Chen Deng Died From Severe Brain Trauma

A New York City college student who died from immense brain trauma after a fraternity hazing event in the Poconos is currently being investigated by police.

District Attorney Chief County Detective Eric Kerchner told Reuters that 19-year-old Baruch College freshman Chen "Michael" Deng was pledging Pi Delta Psi fraternity, and traveled with about 30 other people to Tunkhannock Township in Pennsylvania for a weekend retreat.

Deng and three other pledges were in the midst of a ceremony outside of a Candlewood Drive home on Sunday when things took a fatal turn.

Deng reportedly "got tackled too many times," Monroe County District Attorney E. David Christine, Jr. told Reuters. He suffered unspecified head injuries, and was then brought into the house.

Deng's friends drove him to the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Hospital in Wilkes-Barre. When he was checked into the emergency room, Deng was said to be unresponsive and in critical condition, according to Pocono Mountain Regional Police.

He was put on life support after being diagnosed with serious brain trauma.

He died the next day.

Investigators are now on the hunt to "identify who was responsible for the injuries that killed [Deng]," Christine said to Reuters.

Baruch College, a section of the City University of New York, didn't offer comment. Pi Delta Psi didn't answer Reuters calls for statements.
