Two were arrested on Monday in connection with the murder of an Eastern Michigan University football player that occurred at an apartment complex off campus.
The university announced on Monday that one suspect was being arraigned on Sunday, while the other was arraigned the next day in reported relation with the death of Demarius Reed.
"We have taken the first step in bringing about justice for Demarius Reed," City Manager Ralph Lange wrote in a statement.
University President Susan Martin also released a statement detailing the city and campus investigators' work "identifying suspects in this tragic and senseless crime against a wonderful student and inspiring young man," according to the Associated Press.
One of the suspects has been identified as Ed. J. Thomas, a 20-year-old resident of Detroit. He was accused on Sunday of a number of charges, including murder and armed robbery. Thomas is currently being helled in Washtenaw County Jail. The name of the second suspect has not yet been released.
Reed, a 20-year-old communications major, played football in both highschool and college. The Chicago native played six games this season, the Associated Press reported, and was well-liked by those that knew him.
Reed was shot multiple times at an apartment complex owned by the school, during a potential robbery.
Ypsilanti police Chief Tony DeGiusti said that Reed's body was reportedly slumped in a hallway of the complex following the shooting because passerby assumed he'd passed out from a night of hard drinking.
"I realize that these arrests will bring a sense of relief," the police chief stated. "However, it should not affect the level of vigilance that should be exercised regarding personal safety. People should still travel in groups when they can, they should avoid risk-taking behaviors, they should still be aware of their environment."
