Smartphone Data Subscriptions to Reach 5.6 Billion by 2019

According to the latest Ericsson Mobility Report, mobile subscriptions are expected to reach 9.3 billion by 2019 and 5.6 billion of which will be from smartphone data subscriptions.

Following the trend starting from 2010, smartphone data subscriptions accounted to 500 million. It increased to 900 million in 2011, 1.3 billion in 2012, and 1.9 billion at this time of the year.

In the graph published along report, it shows that by next year, smartphone data subscriptions will increase by seven billion and after 2014; it will increase by six billion each year, thus reaching 5.6 billion subscribers in 2019.

Douglas Gilstrap, SVP and Head of Strategy at Ericsson, said in a press release, "The rapid pace of smartphone uptake has been phenomenal and is set to continue. It took more than five years to reach the first billion smartphone subscriptions, but it will take less than two to hit the 2 billion mark. Between now and 2019, smartphone subscriptions will triple.”

“Interestingly, this trend will be driven by uptake in China and other emerging markets as lower-priced smartphone models become available,” he added.

As of the moment, 25 to 30 percent of all mobile phone subscriptions are from smartphones and still, 55 percent of all the mobile phones sold in the third quarter of 2013 are smartphones.

In addition to the statistics, the report also said that by 2019, 90 percent of the overall population will be covered by WCDMA/HSPA and 65 percent of the overall population will be covered by 4G/LTE networks.

Furthermore, smartphone traffic will increase by 10 times sometime between today and 2019, thus, reaching 10 exabytes. By 2019, roughly 10 percent of the traffic will be coming from the social networking, another 10 percent from web services and half of the mobile traffic will be from the increasingly growing video services.
