A number of Facebook users who have posted "I like faggots" were banned by Facebook.
Faggot is a derogatory word used to describe gay people and it is considered an offensive term. However, in reality it is a dish that looks like a huge meatball made up of pig’s liver and heart. The dish is very popular in the Wales and Midlands.
Since not many know the latter, some use the term to humiliate, offend, and insult gay people.
Robert Wilkes, one of the users who were banned from using the social network for 12 hours, said in his post, “I love faggots,” then was accused of “homophobic language” when what he literally meant was he loves the faggot dish.
Another banned user was the Shropshire-resident Eileen Perrins who uploaded an image of the dish, also known as “savory ducks.”
Margaret Jones has commented on the bans slapped on other people, thus, leading to her temporary prohibition from using Facebook.
“I'm disgusted with Facebook's reaction to the word faggots. It's a delicacy in the Black Country,” said Jones to Express&Star.
A spokesperson from Facebook acknowledged that a post had been deleted in error as a result of a misunderstanding. However, “faggot” is not considered offensive when used in a culinary perspective, the spokesperson said.
“We understand it's disappointing for people to be banned by Facebook, however we also appreciate that Facebook has to act responsibly concerning comments posted on their site,” said a spokesperson of Mr. Brain, the leading brand of faggots and urged the social networking company to permit their users to discuss their favorite meals, to Daily Mail.
He added, “Hopefully Facebook has now solved the issue so that fans of Mr Brain's Faggots can once again comment freely without being inhibited.”
Now, even David Cameron, the Prime Minister of United Kingdom, calls for Facebook to review and revise its policies.
