Something very big is being built in secrecy at a site in San Francisco Bay. According to reports, it appears that Google could be behind whatever the large-scale project is.
According to the L.A. Times a multistory structure is under construction on a barge off of the Hanger 3 at Treasure Island, a former Navy base. The project has been getting a lot of attention from locals as a result of the clearly high levels of security surrounding the area.
Researchers from CNET too an extensive look at the mysterious structure and those who are behind it and ended up finding an interesting connection to Google. After speaking with the director of operations for the island, the site was told it belongs to a company called By & Large LLC. When the tech site called the number associated with the company, it was reportedly greeted with this messaged: "Thank you for calling Google. The number you dialed is no longer in service."
The site then found the name given to it that was associated with the company and found that Tim Brandon is now listed as having Google as his client, according to his LinkedIn profile. His responsibilities reads that his responsibilities are to "lead an manage all acquisition and disposition activity for Google's Silicon Valley portfolio." After CNET reached out to him, all mentions of his affiliation with Google were removed from the site.
Rumors are circulating that the site could be a floating data center, which Google was granted a patent for back in 2009. That patent received a lot of attention when it was filed but has seen no movement until now.
CBS San Francisco also reported that the site belongs to Google but seems to be under the impression that it is going to a floating retail store. The report labeled the building as being "kind of an Apple Store" for the Google Glass and other products. Once it is complete, it would be towed from its current location to San Francisco's Fort Mason, where it would then open to the public, according to the CBS report.
Information is still all just rumor and conjecture at this point. Only time will tell what Google has planned for this new site, or to what degree it's involved at all.
