The U.S Food and Drug Administration had been receiving a lot of complaints on the recalled Chobani yogurt. There are at least 170 people that had informed the agency that they got ill after they have eaten recalled Chobani yogurt as of Friday. So far, the agency has not conducted any test on the complaints and has not confirmed that their illnesses were indeed caused by the yogurt.
Chobani had announced a recall of their yogurt products for "product concerns" on Sept. 5. Apparently, there had been a number of illness reports associated with yogurt in containers that seemed swollen or bloated. Some customers even reported hissing or exploding containers and those that have an off taste. The yogurt had been discovered to be contaminated with a type of mold, called Mucor circinelloides, that causes spoilage among dairy products.
For many people, Mucor circinelloides does not really pose any serious risk on health. When it is inhaled however, it can affect or compromise the health of those with weak immune systems which include very young children, expectant mothers, seniors, people having chemotherapy treatment and those that are taking antacids every day. It is therefore advisable to refrain from sniffing the yogurt to check for bad odor if someone suspects that there’s something wrong with it.
The recall targets those with labels "Best By Sept. 11 to Oct. 7" with an IMS number of 16-012. The recalled Chobani products include: all flavors of 3.5 ounce cups; 6 ounce cups, all flavors; 32 ounce tubs, all flavors; and 16 ounce tubs, all flavors. Other products that have been recalled are Chobani Champions 2.25 ounce tubes in 8, 16, and 36 count, all flavors; Chobani Champions 3.5 ounce cups, all flavors; Chobani Flip 5.3 ounce containers, all flavors; and Chobani bite 3.5 ounce cups, all flavors.
