Playing on more than 2,000 screens, the popular boy band One Direction is expected to top the Labor Day movie box office chart with their 3D concert documentary "One Direction: This is Us." The film is expected to gross $22 million over the course of the extended four-day weekend.
"This Is Us" follows Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik and Liam Payne as they embark on a 150-date world tour. The film cost a surprisingly inexpensive $10 million to create. By contrast, last summer's major concert film "Katy Perry: Part of Me," ran its creators $13 million. Perry's film sits at the number four position on the genre list. Number one is the Feb. 2011 film by Justin Bieber, "Never Say Never," which grossed $73 million in the U.S. and took home $29.5 million on its opening weekend.
One Direction promoted the film by making an appearance on NBC's "Today," where they played to the biggest audience the show has ever seen. In addition they performed on "America's Got Talent." Their new single "Best Song Ever," which appears in the film, has risen to the No. 18 spot on the charts from No. 21 on the Hot 100. Now in it's fifth week on the chart, Billboard reports it will peak at No. 2.
The long Labor Day weekend will be very kind to the British boys as their star continues to rise. The film, being released by Sony Pictures' TriStar label was directed by Oscar-nominated documentarian Morgan Spurlock, made famous for his scathing fast-food documentary "Super Size Me." "This is Us" will be Spurlock's highest-grossing picture to date, even beating his 2004 hit which collected $11.5 million.
