Barnes & Noble Drops Nook with Glowlight Price to $99

Good news to those looking for an affordable e-reader, Barnes & Noble has dropped the price of its Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight from $120 to $99.

"At just $99, our high-quality, top-rated NOOK Simple Touch GlowLight is an unbeatable value for customers who are seeking an unparalleled, pure reading experience that goes from beach to bed, day or night," said Michael P. Huseby, President, Barnes & Noble, Inc. & CEO, NOOK Media LLC in a press release. "NOOK Simple Touch GlowLight is the first Reader to hit the market with built-in illumination for reading in the dark and is the perfect way to experience NOOK's best-in-class digital reading experience at an unbelievable price."

The Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight was first released in May 2012 with a starting price of $139 as a backlit version of the Nook Simple Touch. The price drop seemed to be an indication that the largest book retailer company is clearing its shelves in preparation of a new Nook model expected to debut this fall.

It is also believed that the price drop strategy is an adaptation of the successful pricing strategy used by its U.K counterpart in which the retailers almost had the Nook e-reader out of stock, Forbes assumed.

Or maybe, the company is struggling in marketing their e-readers as indicated by a a 46 percent drop on sales of the the E-Ink Holdings. The E-Ink Holdings is a manufacturer of the electronic paper being used by Amazon.com, Sony,Motorola, and others including Barnes & Noble. The e-paper company released a report on Friday about its loss.

Two months ago, the N.Y-based book retailer announced that it halting the production of its own Nook hardware.

Barnes & Noble has not released announcement yet if the new Nook release will happen this fall but one thing for sure or up to when it plans to keep the $99 price of the Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight.

The price drop is the best deal for e-readers out there as its competitors-- Kindle and Kobo-- are still selling at $120 and $130 respectively.
