TheScore Sports App to Start Covering eSports

It's no secret in the video game world that eSports have become vastly popular...and lucrative. It has moved out of the basements, into the arenas and is making serious money. The International, a well-known gaming tournament, offers about $11 million in prize money to winners.

Now, according to a report over at The Globe and Mail, Canadian sports news mobile app, TheScore, will begin covering tournament play of games such as "League of Legends," "Call of Duty" and "StarCraft."

"eSports is a sport and we want to cover it like a sport," Chief Operating Officer Benjie Levy said. "We wanted to create an app to give eSports fans around the world the same coverage and opportunity we give to 'mainstream' sports fans."

While there are several websites currently reporting on eSports, TheScore claims it's the first major sports media company to make a mobile app specifically for gamers.

TheScore reports on a worldwide sports "big picture," letting users customize their feeds to particular teams, leagues, and players. The company stated in October that it had 9.2 million active monthly users.

Video games are the next big market for TheScore to expand into, Levy said.

"Globally last year, 71 million people watched eSports," he continued. "Growth is on the right track and moving rapidly beyond a niche audience to a mainstream audience."
