"X-Men: Days of Future Past" writer Simon Kinberg confirmed Channing Tatum is expected to appear in the "X-Men: Apocalypse."

Tatum recently told The Hollywood Reporter he is close to signing a deal with Fox, but didn't specify if it is a solo film or a character appearance in the "X-Men" franchise.

"I hope to be joining -- everything's not done yet," Tatum told THR. "I've obviously been in talks, and we're on the one yard line...I'm always afraid of being like, 'Yes it's totally happening' and then it doesn't happen."

"I'm dying to do it," he added.

According the Daily Beast, Kinberg reiterated the deal is still in the works, but hasn't signed on yet. However, if Tatum signs a deal he will be making an appearance in "X-Men: Apocalypse."

"Gambit is still in-motion and being figured out," Kinberg said. "Channing made it known that it was a character that he loved and would love to play, and all the people who work on the X-Men movies are huge fans of his, so the notion of him playing it is exciting. I'm more fascinated by anti-heroes, and Gambit is one of those.

"I don't know why he wasn't explored in the original X-Men movies," he added. "Maybe the reason why was because they wanted to focus on Rogue/Bobby or the platonic Rogue/Wolverine relationship, and maybe there were too many similarities between Wolverine and Gambit, so in order to make it a Wolverine-centric franchise they had to cut him loose."

"X-Men: Apocalypse" will be released to theaters on May 27, 2016. "X-Men: Days of Future Past" is playing in theaters now.
