Interim House Speaker Patrick McHenry allegedly kicked former speaker Nancy Pelosi out of her office so that he could move into the space himself under orders from Republican Kevin McCarthy.

The order was one of McHenry's first actions after becoming the temporary speaker following the ousting vote for McCarthy. The message was conveyed to Pelosi's team via email, where it said, "Please vacate the space tomorrow, the room will be re-keyed."

It was House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries' staff who accomplished the order, as stated by Pelosi's office. The former speaker criticized her forced eviction from the office as a "sharp departure from tradition." She claimed that she gave Dennis Hastert "a significantly larger suite of officers for as long as he wished" when she became the House speaker.

The Democrat has been in California as she said she needs to be in the state to attend the funeral of the late Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein. Pelosi said that she could not retrieve her belongings at this time because she was in California to mourn the loss of Feinstein, as per the Western Journal.

The office shuffle is only one of many issues accompanying McCarthy's removal from office that must be resolved as Congress moves forward after the historic vote. McCarthy was leaving the speaker's office carrying a box on Tuesday night.

Following the 216-210 vote that ousted McCarthy, which Rep. Matt Gaetz instigated, he said he would not be working to regain the position. While the House had been scheduled to be in session to consider budget bills this week, reports suggest that it would no longer push through with those plans.

As McCarthy leaves his office, he is allegedly moving into the office of former Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, a claim that GOP Rep. Garret Graves made. Sources close to Pelosi and Hoyer said the development is retaliation for Democrats siding against McCarthy in the vote to remove him from the speakership.

Ousting of Kevin McCarthy

On the other hand, Graves blamed Democrats for their help in ousting McCarthy from his position. He said that he does not know what the Democratic lawmakers are complaining about because he claims that they are the ones who created the situation, according to CNN.

Traditionally, House speakers give their predecessors access to "hideaway" offices near the House floor after they step down from the post. Pelosi referenced Hastert in her response to being evicted; he was the speaker from 1999 to 2007.

Following a scandal over hush-money payments, Hastert was sentenced to 15 months in prison in 2016 after he admitted that he sexually abused teenage boys when he was a high-school wrestling coach.

On Tuesday, staff were seen removing former speaker Pelosi's items from her office, prompting the former speaker to say that the office space does not matter to her. She added that it seems to be important to other people, adding that she now hopes the Republicans work on important matters, said The Guardian.
