Nikki Haley, a former South Carolina governor and United Nations ambassador, officially declared on Tuesday that she will run for president in 2024, becoming the first Republican to contest Donald Trump for the party's nomination.
Haley, 51, examined the age gap between President Joe Biden, 80, and her opponent Donald Trump, 76. Biden is likely to declare his candidacy in the following weeks, per CNBC.
Nikki Haley's political views were expressed in a video posted on Twitter, saying that seven out of the previous eight presidential elections saw the Republican Party lose the popular vote. She said the situation needed to change, and a new generation of leaders is needed.
Haley made her candidacy official a day before her planned campaign kickoff in Charleston, South Carolina, and she immediately began advocating for budgetary restraint and increased border security.
Haley has joined former President Donald Trump in seeking the Republican candidacy. Haley was the US Ambassador during Trump's presidency and left in December 2018.

Donald Trump Blasts Haley
After the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, Nikki Haley officially distanced herself from Trump, making speeches denouncing Trump's rhetoric leading up to the incidents on that day and his continued assertion that the 2020 election was rigged, according to Fox News.
Donald Trump then seemed to take a jab at Haley by bringing up the fact that she had "publicly" stated she wouldn't run for president in 2024 if the former POTUS did.
In an interview with Hugh Hewitt earlier this month, the former president took another mild swipe at Haley, describing her as "overly ambitious."
Nikki Haley was elected as governor of South Carolina in 2010 and again in 2014. She is the state's first woman and Asian American to hold the position. Before that, she served in the South Carolina legislature for six years, per USA Today.
