NBC's incoming executive producer Rick Eid revealed that the longest running TV drama series Law and Orders SVU Season 18 will feature an episode inspired by the documentary series Making a Murderer.
Eid said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the episode would be about a guy who was wrongfully imprisoned for a rape who did not commit, just like Steve Avery. He added, "He's exonerated by DNA, but Joe Biden is in that episode playing himself and talking about the rape kit backlog. That episode explores the idea of what happens when an innocent man is sent to prison for 18 years and gets out? We continue to find inspiration in the headlines, in the zeitgeist and try to put our own Law & Order, Dick Wolf spin on it all and make it complicated and tell both sides of the story and hopefully create some interesting conversation for the people who watch."
Besides this, Lt. Olivia Benson along with the Special Victims Unit will be running on new cases. NBC revealed that Benson would be facing a mass shooting case in the episode premiere of the Law and Order SVU Season 18. With its title, "Terrorized," the seasoned police officer will be working with the joint terrorism task force to find the suspects of several terrorist activities in New York City, cite International Business Times.
"It's a very topical issue, the idea of, is the killer tied to an extremist group? Is it just a crazy person? Is the wife of the shooter involved? Is she an unwilling and forced participant?" explained by the executive producer.
In addition to these upcoming new cases, Eid said that the viewers would see a lot of emotional tension between Benson and Chief Dodd due to the death of Mike Dodd. Chief Dodd holds Benson accountable for the demise of his son just the way the latter holds herself responsible for this tragic incident.
Law and Order SVU Season 18 will return next week, September 21, on NBC.
