A 29-page leaked report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) revealed that food shortage may be another issue humans have to face in the next decades. This is another threat brought by climate change.

The United Nations panel who reviewed the studies concluded that global warming may have a direct negative effect on crop production in most part of globe. They projected a two percent volume reduction on the food supply each decade. Apparently, the increasing temperature makes it harder for the crops to grow which is mostly dependent on the water supply from rainfalls.

The leaked report also shared that the effects of climate change is already affecting crop production as early as now. It also highlighted that food shortage may be aggravated as humans continue to emit greenhouse gases thus going back to their previous report  that human activities contributed to 95 percent of global warming.

The new report sets a different tone compared to the panel’s 2007 report. The previous report already warned of possible food shortage but people should not be alarmed because there will still be enough food supply due to higher crop productions in other areas. However, for this year, the food supply will be two percent short in accommodating global needs thus there will be areas that will experience food shortage.

Scientists have projected a 14 percent increase on the demand per decade brought by the increasing world population which will be 9.6 billion in 2050. The final report is set for release in April 2014 which will also include recommendations on reducing the impact of global warming.

When New York Times asked IPCC spokesman Jonathan Lynn about it, he neither confirmed nor denied the report.

“It’s a work in progress,” Mr. Lynn said. “It’s likely to change.”
