Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson's wife Candy Carson sang the national anthem at a campaign event in Iowa over the weekend, according to Vibe.

Candy met Ben at Yale University where she triple majored in music, medicine and psychology, according to the International Business Times. After Yale, Candy earned an MBA from Johns Hopkins University. She plays the violin and the church organ.

Born Lacena Rustin in the inner city of Detroit, the 62-year-old is the daughter of a teacher and a factory worker. She said she "grew up poor," according to the Hill. While Ben worked long hours as the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Candy raised their three sons Murray, Benjamin Jr. and Rhoeyce.

Candy "sometimes felt like a single mom because he wasn't around most of the time," she told Fox News' Megyn Kelly earlier this month.

Candy, a devout Christian, believes her faith sustained her 40-year marriage.

"A family that prays together, stays together," said Candy.

She helped her husband co-found the Carson Scholars Fund, a nonprofit that awards scholarships to students in Maryland, and also helped him write the bestselling book "A More Perfect Union: What We the People Can Do to Reclaim Our Constitutional Liberties," which was published this month. Candy also had a hand in writing "One Vote: Make Your Voice Heard" and "One Nation: What We Can All Do to Save America's Future," both published in 2014.

Candy may very well help the Republican candidate keep his current lead in the presidential candidate race.
