Ohio Governor John Kasich had some innovative financial planning ideas that he shared with an audience during a "Fiscal Fridays" event in New Hampshire.
Explaining that a balanced budget would require reforms and changes to entitlements like Social Security, the Republican presidential candidate requested audience members not yet eligible for Social Security payments to raise their hands.
He then asked them if they would mind a slight reduction in their social security entitlements in order to benefit the whole country.
When an audience member quipped he would get "upset," Kasich retorted, "you're going to have get over it," reported Raw Story.
When the news spread and questions arose, Kasich dismissed the remark as a "silly" joke, according to UPI.
However, he continued to speak on the topic of entitlements at length, saying that he was willing to accept the people's wrath in order to get something done.
"You're on Medicare and you want me to ignore the fact that it's going broke, you're not going to like me. I'd rather have people be in a position where they're aggravated with me so I can accomplish something, than have them love me and accomplish nothing, OK. I'm not there to run a popularity contest," he told the audience, according to CNN.
