An amateur video has captured a lightning bolt hitting a Delta Airliner at the Harsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

The video, which has since been posted on YouTube by a man named Jack Perkins, shows the plane in line for take-off on a rain-drenched airfield when it is struck by lightning at the 18-second mark.

The powerful bolt hits the back of Boeing 737-900R Delta plane and ignites something on the plane and around its tires.

Passengers inside the aircraft were clueless of the incident, as they remain safe due to the plane's metal exterior that acts as a Faraday cage, which distributes the electrical charge around the outside of the plane without affecting the inside, The Washington Post reported.

Delta spokesman Morgan Durrant confirmed that lightning struck Las Vegas-bound Delta Flight 67 on Tuesday, as it was in the take-off line in the Atlanta airport.

There were no reports of injuries among the 111 customers and six crew members, Durrant said, according to CNN.

It's unclear if the 737 sustained any damage or was able to take off after the lighting strike, but Perkins certainly was in the right place at the right time to capture this footage, The Independent reported.
