Director J.J. Abrams and LucasFilm have done a great job of slowly building anticipation for December's "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." That excitement sky rocketed with the recent release of the new trailer.

Since its release, fans have been combing through every single second of the trailer for possible clues to this new film's plot. As a result, a new rumor is gaining steam among Force enthusiasts.

Warning: The following contains possible spoilers for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

It has long been assumed by fans that Daisy Ridley's character Rey was the daughter of Han Solo. However, that opinion has begun to shift. Now, some believe Rey is actually the daughter of Luke Skywalker.

Making Star Wars recently released details about a scene that has the Millennium Falcon crash land on a snow planet. It is there that certain actions may hint at the continued Skywalker lineage.

"One of the big hints about Luke and Rey's relationship comes in the passing of Luke's lightsaber," Sean Erickson of Movie Pilot wrote. "In the speculation surrounding this new rumor, it is further established that Leia is turning over the lightsaber to Finn in the hopes that it will end up in the hands of Rey."

The lightsaber in question is rumored to be Anakin Skywalker's original weapon. Passing it down from father to son to daughter would make sense. But that isn't the only supporting evidence.

"Perhaps the biggest clue in here is the reveal that Rey is using some mind control skills to put a whammy on some Stormtroopers," Erickson continued. "This has led to all sorts of speculation about how strong the force is in this girl and whether or not she's been keeping this skill on the down low for some time."

All of this is still unconfirmed at this point but it would make sense that Rey would be related to at least one of the iconic character from the previous films.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" will hit theaters on December 18.
